Resident Evil 7: A Terrifying Return to Survival Horror

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a 2017 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. The game marks a new beginning for the Resident Evil series, as it adopts a first-person perspective and a photorealistic style powered by the RE Engine. The game follows Ethan Winters, a civilian who searches for his missing wife in a derelict plantation occupied by an infected family and other horrific creatures.
In this article, we will review the gameplay, story, graphics, and features of Resident Evil 7, and explain why it is one of the best horror games of all time.
Gameplay
Resident Evil 7 diverges from the more action-oriented Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, returning to the franchise’s survival horror roots. The game emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, and resource management, as well as stealth and combat. The player controls Ethan Winters from a first-person perspective, which enhances the immersion and tension of the game. Ethan can arm himself with various weapons, such as handguns, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws, but he also has to deal with limited ammunition and health items. The game also features a crafting system that allows the player to create ammo, health kits, and other items from materials found in the environment.
The game’s enemies include the Baker family, a group of twisted individuals who have been infected by a mysterious mold that grants them enhanced strength and regeneration abilities. They will stalk and attack Ethan throughout the game, sometimes triggering scripted events or boss battles. The game also features the Molded, humanoid fungal creatures that can appear from walls or floors. The Molded are fast and deadly, but they can be killed with fire or headshots. The game also has mutated insects and animals that pose a threat to Ethan.
The game has several difficulty modes, ranging from Easy to Madhouse. The higher the difficulty, the more scarce the resources, the more aggressive the enemies, and the more challenging the puzzles. The game also has an autosave system that saves the player’s progress at certain points. However, on Madhouse mode, the player can only save using cassette tapes that are found in limited quantities.
Story

Resident Evil 7 takes place in 2017, four years after the events of Resident Evil 6. The game follows Ethan Winters, a man who receives a video message from his wife Mia, who has been missing for three years. In the video, Mia tells Ethan to come find her at a plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana. Ethan travels to the location, hoping to reunite with his wife. However, he soon discovers that the plantation is home to the Baker family, who have been infected by a bioweapon called Eveline. Eveline is a young girl who has the ability to control mold and create hallucinations. She considers the Bakers her family and wants Ethan to join them as well.
Ethan must survive the horrors of the plantation and find out what happened to Mia and Eveline. Along the way, he encounters other characters who are either allies or enemies. These include Zoe Baker, a daughter of the family who tries to help Ethan escape; Lucas Baker, a son of the family who enjoys torturing his victims with traps and puzzles; Jack Baker, the patriarch of the family who relentlessly pursues Ethan; Marguerite Baker, the matriarch of the family who controls insects; and Chris Redfield, a former member of BSAA who works for an organization called Blue Umbrella.
The game’s story is told through cutscenes, documents, audio logs, video tapes, and phone calls. The game also has multiple endings depending on the player’s choices throughout the game.
