The accident claimed the lives of at least 23 people, including four children, and left 12 survivors. The driver was reportedly unfamiliar with the route and attempted to cross the fast-flowing water over the bridge in Mwingi, Kitui county.
The incident shocked and saddened many Kenyans, who expressed their condolences and prayers for the families of the victims. Among them was Mr Wise, a popular gospel singer and songwriter, who composed a song titled “Mwingi accident Rest in peace” as a tribute to the departed souls. Many Kenyans have called on the government to improve the infrastructure and ensure the safety of travellers. Some have also blamed the driver for his negligence and urged other drivers to exercise caution and avoid crossing flooded rivers.
The government has promised to investigate the cause of the accident and take appropriate action. The Kenya Red Cross and other humanitarian agencies have been providing assistance to the survivors and the bereaved families. The Catholic Church has also offered spiritual support and counselling to the affected community. A mass funeral for the victims is planned for December 11, 2021 at the Mwingi Catholic Church.

It also serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones. As Mr Wise sings in the chorus: “We will miss you, we will love you / You will always be in our hearts / Rest in peace, rest in peace / Till we meet again.”
